Flash Streaming at NU

On Friday, April 10, 2009, NUIT Academic & Research Technologies delivered our first live Flash streaming event.  Working closely with the Bienen School of Music, we were able to deliver a high quality Flash stream at 640×360 with 778Kbps of bandwidth without any connection drops.  This is a significant change from our older streaming service – Real Helix – which was typically used at about half the speed and resolution.

The live performance used for the first Flash stream was a Canadian Guitar Quartet along with the ballet group, Dance Works Chicago.  The quartet played flawlessly and the ballet group added so much more to the performance.   A few snapshots from the live event are below.

While still not yet a production service, since we are still fine tuning the broadcast settings for optimum quality for all viewers, even with the results of the first live Flash stream we have been able to deliver a higher quality and more reliable stream than ever before.  We’re eager to continue pushing this technology and soon make it the standard for all live broadcasts from Northwestern.  Our next live Flash stream will be a master vocal class with the Bienen School of Music and Richard Goode on April 21st at 7pm.
